Behind each of our projects and commissions are incredible communities, artists, and partners. Our work is centered around building connections between people and places, through sustained, meaningful interactions with art and artists.
Our journal is where we document the different voices and stories behind each project through interviews, case studies, and articles.
Case Study: Frances Disley
Since 2018, Frances Disley has been commissioned by Rule of Threes, to produce a body of work for our programme Human Libraries, beginning with RRR a performance/workout, and video installation. During the pandemic, as part of our programme of “commoning care”, we invited Fran to produce her first digital commission Freshly Cut Grass — a series of relaxation resources designed to make meditation more accessible, understandable and relatable. Audio-guided journeys were distributed to Human Libraries along with bespoke packs containing a printed guide, scents, and tea bags to make the calming experience fully sensory.
Semillas from la Sala: borlotti, carico, frijoles negros
Tending to the soil, planting seeds, watching them grow, harvesting beans, and drying them for next year, to share and grow again. A grounding practice that takes care of our place in a wider ecology, as well as a local, sharing economy. In tending to these things, and following their rhythms — slow, seasonal, circular — we learn better how to tend to ourselves and those around us. Each year, la Sala shares seeds – some local, some heritage varieties, all saved from last year’s crop. This year’s offering marks the week of the spring equinox.
Case Study: The Turnpike Gallery
A cornerstone of our practice, we help art organisations realise their true potential, and support plans for energetic and engaging programmes, aligning the needs of local people with the creativity and ambition of artists. Encapsulating the spirit of change-making in place, and example of our sustained partnerships, is The Turnpike — an independent art space who we have been working with closely since March 2020.
Fox Irving: Tarot cards & care practices
Tracing the phases of the moon, artist Fox Irving has created a series of Tarot cards, accompanied by care practices. Using different moon phases as signals, the practices encourage moments to check in with yourself and use the new moon as a marker to set intentions for the month ahead and the full moon to mark letting go.
Playing out with Pester & Rossi
Since early 2020, we began the Playing Out in Bootle with artists Pester+Rossi. When lockdown hit, we had to completely adapt our plans to ensure children in Bootle still had access to new ways to play. We caught up with them to talk about their collaborative practice, future plans for the future.
